Toxic Blue Green Algae - Cyanobacteria is the scientific name for blue-green algae, it is commonly know as "pond scum"

Cyanobacteria form in warm shallow, slow-moving or stagnant (still) water. The scum or mass is made up of cells, which can house poisons called cyanobacterial toxins. When the algae cells die and burst they release the toxins or poisons into the water.

when a large mass of cyanobacteria forms in a body of water, it is called a bloom.

The toxic or poisonous compound inside the Cyanobateria algae are called Microcystins.

These toxins are poisonous to both humans and livestock and have been know to cause death or extreme sickness. Swimmers can experience irritation of the skin.

Microcystins are the most common of the cyanobacterial toxins found in water, these toxins are the one that most often are responsible for poisoning animals and humans who come into contact with toxic blooms. Children are especially susceptible because of their low body mass, the toxins attack the liver and can cause serious damage.

In Canada these algae blooms mostly appear during the hot summer months and have been most prevalent in the prairies, especially Saskatchewan and Alberta.

TREATMENTS- Chemicals like copper sulphate or any other treatment method that causes the cells to break down and release their toxins should not be used. Also remember these chemicals are often also harmful and will kill beneficial organisms and plants as well.

The best way to avoid the problems associated with cyanobacterial blooms is by prevention, your best option is to stop the blooms from forming before they become a serious risk to you and your animals.

The best method of prevention is to reduce the input of nutrients, such as fertilizers, generally high in phosphates, into the water source. If this is not possible then there are now safe and cost effective ways to control the algae blooms, such as clear pond and clear pond extreme.
